Humanimal Trust is calling on 7 to 18-year-olds all over the world to get creative for this year’s British Science Week in March.
The call comes as the charity founded by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick launches its first ever Creative Awards. Centred around the theme of British Science Week 2023 - Connections - the Awards encourage children and young people to create a piece of visual art or written work to celebrate the connections between all species.
Each entry will then be judged by a panel consisting of founder Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, world history author and storyteller, Christopher Lloyd, and publisher and editor-in-chief of What on Earth Books, Nancy Feresten.
Noel said: 'The bond we have with the animals we share our planet with goes beyond that of love and companionship. We want to fire up young people's imaginations and empower them to explore the amazing connections humans have with animals in all forms. There is far more connecting us than dividing us in biology and sentience. We want to inspire future guardians of the planet in this generation to think more inclusively and compassionately when it comes to our animal friends.'
Entries can be anything from a short story or poem to artwork, photography or video and the winners from each age category (7-11 years, 12-14 years, 15-16 years and 17-18 years) will receive prizes, including a bundle of books, a signed copy of Vetman by Noel Fitzpatrick and online shopping vouchers. The winning entries will also be shared on Humanimal Trust’s website.

“Ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn about the wonderful bond and connections between humans and animals is key to One Medicine, and we hope our Creative Awards 2023 will enable that to happen in a really positive way.”
Children and young people can get involved in a school setting, club or at home and entries for the Creative Awards 2023 should be submitted by 31 March.
Christopher Lloyd, author of children’s book Humanimal, said: “Many of the things we may think are unique to humans, have actually been happening in the animal world for millions of years. There are so many astonishing ways that animals are just like us and Humanimal Trust’s Creative Awards are a brilliant way of celebrating this.”
