Margarida started practising General Hospital Nursing but her love for healthcare impelled her to go on to study Veterinary Medicine. While working as a mixed practice veterinarian she finished her Masters in Conservation Biology, mostly focusing on zoonotic parasitic diseases. She then went on to complete a PhD in Veterinary Sciences, later working at the Virology Department at the National Animal Health Reference Laboratory in Portugal. Her understanding and desire to see a One Medicine approach in practice motivated her to volunteer both for human and animal health NGOs. With a strong belief in the benefits of One Medicine and what Humanimal Trust stands for, Margarida moved to the UK to take up the Science Officer post in September 2019.
